Hans-Dieter Anhäuser, owner of a joke articles factory, is a creep. He cheats on his wife, neglects his children, bullies his employees - and all just before Christmas. But then he has an accident, falls into a coma and experiences his own funeral in a dream. In the process, he learns what everyone really thinks of him. To make matters worse, he meets his deceased father-in-law, the former factory owner, who tells him that he, Hans-Dieter, has one last chance. If he doesn't manage to make his family happy by Christmas, he will send him to hell on Christmas Eve.

Christian Kempenich is the Chief Clerk in the Town Council in a small town on the river Mosel in Germany. He goes to Cologne to attend a family baptism, and afterwards is lured to sample the wicked delights of the big city. He wakes up the next morning in a cheap hotel room with no memory of what happened, but there's a strange woman asleep in the bed with him. Horrified, he heads home with his guilty secret. Meanwhile his wife went on the river steamer to the next town; an Italian tenor has been giving her singing lessons and has amorous intentions towards her, and he takes the same steamer. They stay on it to Koblenz and have to stay the night. The rest of the film revolves around Kempenich and his wife as they alternately show guilt about their own behaviour and outrage as they learn what their spouse might have done.

She has to give up her plan to become a teacher and, against her mother Petra's wishes, manages to perform in a political cabaret. The suspect knew the victims from a stay in a children's home many years ago. The teachers there enforced discipline and order using sometimes sadistic methods. Their wards did the same. There was a strict caste system among the children. Sneelin belonged to the lowest caste. He was a so called "Snow Child", one that his mother wanted "to foist" on his father.
